The Czech Republic is located in the heart of Europe and has a population of approximately 10.7 million. The country shares borders with Germany, Poland, Slovakia, and Austria. The Czech Republic is a member of the European Union and the Eurozone. The economy of the Czech Republic has experienced strong growth in recent years, leading to a significant increase in the gross domestic product (GDP). The primary economic sector is the service sector, followed by industry and trade. The Czech Republic is particularly important as a production location for the automotive industry, machinery manufacturing, electrical engineering and defence industry.

The country maintains close trade relations with its European neighbours, especially Germany, Poland and Slovakia. Important international trading partners include Asia and the US. The Czech Republic's imports mainly consist of machinery, electrical engineering, motor vehicles, and petroleum products, whereas exports include cars, machinery, electrical engineering, and chemical products.

The Czech Republic has a well-developed infrastructure with a road and railway network, allowing for efficient and fast transportation within the country and to neighbouring countries. The country has several international airports and a large seaport that is important for goods traffic (located in the capital city, Prague). Overall, the Czech Republic offers favourable conditions for goods transport and logistics.

For Czech Republic transport, it is only logical for you as a company – together with Seacon as your professional partner – to take your logistics to a higher level. On this page, you can read more about our transport solutions for Czech Republic.

Key transport routes in the Czech Republic and your benefits

As a Central European country, the Czech Republic offers a wide range of possibilities for goods transport.

Road transport, in particular, is of great importance for both national and international goods traffic and is connected to important European economic centres. The country plays a significant role as a transit country for freight traffic between Europe and Asia and is part of Corridor V, which connects the Czech Republic with Eastern and Southern Europe and China.

The main highway in the Czech Republic is the D1, which runs from Prague to Brno, providing a direct connection to important cities and countries (including the Czech cities Brno and Ostrava, and countries Poland and Slovakia), and is part of the European road network R1. Another important highway is the D5, which runs from Prague to Pilsen and is part of the road network R5. This road forms a crucial connection to cities like Pilsen and Bavaria, as well as Germany and Austria.

Rail transport has expanded significantly in recent years and has become an important alternative for goods transport. The Czech Republic's railway network spans over 4,000 kilometres and is integrated into a dense international network. The rail network is designed for high capacity and provides fast and reliable connections between the country's major economic centres and those of neighbouring countries.

In terms of air freight, the country has undergone impressive development. The Czech Republic has several international airports that serve as important distribution centres for air cargo traffic. The largest and most important airport is Václav Havel Airport in Prague, which is crucial for both passenger and global cargo traffic.

However, the situation is different for sea freight. Although the Czech Republic is located along the Elbe and Vltava rivers, it only has a few smaller ports such as Lovosice on the Elbe and Ústí nad Labem, which play a minor role in goods transport. However, due to the proximity to major European ports like the Port of Hamburg in Germany (connected through direct rail and road connections to the Czech Republic), goods can still quickly be transported internationally.

Important cities for cargo transport in the Czech Republic

Due to the excellent infrastructure and investments in the Czech economy, three major cities—Prague, Brno, and Ostrava—have developed as particularly interesting locations.

The capital city, Prague, is a significant logistics hub for national and international transport. The city serves as the main economic and cultural centre of the country and acts as a crucial transit point for trade between Europe and Asia. The D1 and D5 highways, as well as the Prague-Vienna-Budapest-Belgrade railway line, are particularly important for goods transport. With its central location, transportation connections, and strong economy, Prague is very interesting for goods transport.

Brno is the second-largest city in the Czech Republic and is an important logistics centre in the country. The city is strategically located in the southeast of the country, at the intersection of major European transport routes. Moreover, the city has an important airport (Brno-Tuřany Airport) that provides good connections within the region and to the rest of Europe.

Ostrava is the third largest city in the Czech Republic. It is an important business centre in the northeastern part of the country and is well-connected to the national and international network through the D1 highway and the Ostrava-Krakow-Warsaw railway line. The Ostrava region has invested in logistics and supply chain in recent years and now has a large number of logistics centres and warehouses.

Groupage Czech Republic - LCL and LTL

The term LTL (Less Than Truck Load) is used in freight transport to indicate that only part of the available cargo space of the truck is filled. In the logistics industry, it is therefore common to combine several partial loads at one loading point or to add a partial load. In short, groupage or LTL is therefore the merging of several smaller loads into one larger load. This optimises the use of the freight container during road freight.

The abbreviation LCL stands for Less than Container Load and in sea freight refers to shipments that do not fill an entire container and are combined with other general cargo in a consolidated container. LCL transport mainly offers price advantages and some benefits in practical handling and stowage. For general cargo, only proportionate transport costs are incurred for the use of the container volume.

Full loads Czech Republic - FCL or FTL

The abbreviation FCL (Full Container Load) is used in sea freight for full container loads. Unlike LCL: a load that only partially fills a container. With FCL loads, the container is loaded by a shipper and unloaded at the destination by a consignee.

With an FTL delivery (Full Truck Load), the shipment fills the entire available cargo space. The truck transports this shipment to its destination without reloading. This is for one recipient. This completely utilises the truck’s transport capacity.

Fast delivery is the main advantage of FTL. This is because there is no need for transhipment or extra route planning to different recipients. The truck drives directly to one destination. It is the most effective method of transporting goods by road to a final destination.

Incoterms®: Protect your international trade with the Czech Republic

As a global logistics chain director, Seacon Logistics deals a lot with Incoterms®. Although we are not involved in the commercial agreements between buyer and seller, we are often consulted about the dangers and consequences of the various Incoterms® before a transaction is concluded. In practice, many companies still underestimate the risks.

To ensure that contractual formulas in the trade of goods are interpreted equally by buyer and seller, we have created a white paper and an infographic.

Important additional information: Public holidays, driving bans and local details

As an EU member, the Czech Republic has a well-developed road and railway network, enabling fast and efficient transportation of goods to, from, and within the Czech Republic. However, there are some regulations to be considered for the transportation of goods within the country:

  • Customs regulations: There are no special customs requirements for transport within the EU. However, special regulations apply for transport to third countries, such as the need for specific documents or permits. Seacon Logistics can assist you with this.
  • Driving bans: While there is no general driving ban in the Czech Republic, there are restrictions on truck traffic on Sundays and public holidays. Therefore, it is advisable to inquire about the regulations in advance.
  • Tolls: Toll fees must be paid on Czech highways and some other roads to finance the maintenance and development of the road network. These fees are calculated based on the distance travelled and the vehicle class.
  • Cargo securing regulations: Following a number of traffic accidents, the Czech Republic has tightened regulations for cargo securing on trucks. We will be happy to provide you with information on the regulations.

If you have more detailed questions about the specifics or rules in Czech Republic, please feel free to contact our team. In a joint logistic analysis, we examine which aspects are relevant for your goods transport.
